CHEMISTRY TO-DO

1) CHEMISTRY FILE
ALL is to hand in chem file by friday (TOMORROW)
there should be 17 items in your contents page but only 15(changed*) worksheet inside
remember to write all dates and marks (if there is) on your content page
write NAME and REG NO. and CLASS on the outside of your file [basic]

2) SPA SKILL 3 WORKSHEET

Complete by friday (TMR).


Hope everyone cooperates so that none of us will get into trouble.
if we can be so efficient during newspaper collection, i believe we can also conquer this challenge in this short period of time!

Hi people!

Yup I’m so nice that I came here to tell you about chem spa skill3! HAHAH. Anyway, this isn’t the REALLY VERY ACCURATE/CORRECT one, because after all, 4/1 or me or any student are not as good as Miss Mok (: so yea, these are the stuffs!

Oh before we start, the class is going to divide into 3 groups,
Group 1 – Reg no. 1-15
Group2 – Reg no. 16-30
Group 3 – Reg no. 31-44
Alright, I know some of us are not in Mok’s class, but just a rough grouping okay (:

Group1 will be doing direct titration,
Group2 will be doing Heat of Neutralisation,
Group3 do back titration!

These are some general things that EVERYBODY must take note of!
1) On Notes given by Mok, 2. Approach/Plan – max 10 lines only, normally should be 5-6 lines.
2) For 7. Discussion and Conclusion, this expt NO NEED TO DO, but in real spa have to do! And it’s based on expected results, like what you will expect to observe blahblah…
3) For 3. Variables, Mok mentioned before, have to list out! And the Independent Variable will be the x-axis for graphs; Dependent Variable will be the y-axis for graphs.
4) Hope you guys have taken down the other important points when she went through that day!


Direct Titration
For this practice expt right, direct titration will be quite easy to do, but in terms of accuracy………I’m not sure! That’s why Mok wants us to try out!

So for this expt, you will have to crush the tablets, and dissolve them in distilled water. There’s a problem here, cos Magnesium Hydroxide and Aluminium Hydroxide are not soluble in water, the crushed tablets might not dissolve fully in water, so there may be inaccuracy in this sense. (That’s why Mok wants us to try out!) But just try to dissolve them in H2O anyway.
And then, direct titration :D remembers the usual titration? If not, can just refer to any VA SPA we done last year (:

Heat of Neutralisation
For this, you guys can refer to the Heat of Neutralisation spa prac we’ve done recently, the ‘cross-graph-experiment’…. Yup, it’s almost the same, just that you have to crush the tablets and dissolve the crushed tablets in distilled water also. (Same as Direct Titration) then you vary the volume of acid/alkaline (in this case, the ‘alkaline’ will be Mg(OH)2 or Al(OH)3 –tablets) added, and etc etc… like the expt we’ve done before!

Back titration
This will be slightly different because we haven’t done this before… so read carefully!
1) Crush the tablets
2) Use known concentration and volume of acid, which MUST BE IN EXCESS.
3) Tablet, in Measured Mass, put into the acid. (In this case, the tablet will be the limiting reactant).
4) The crushed tablets will then react with the acid, and because the acid is in excess, there will be a small amount of acid that will remain unreacted.
5) Using the solution after step4, do titration using another alkaline –with known concentration and volume-
6) If the volume of alkaline solution is lesser, that means the tablet is effective. Because it (the tablet) had neutralized most of the acid, leaving only a small amount of acid to be neutralized by the alkaline solution.

This may be a little hard to understand, but I GUESS that this will be the most accurate way, because we are not dissolving the tablets in H2O, which is like….not a solution. If you guys want to refer, can refer to VA4 which we did last year, it’s almost the same too. Yup, anyway, everybody just do our part yea!

For the apparatus/procedure parts right, if you guys don’t know how to go about doing it, can always refer to the expts we’ve done before, because they are all prepared by Miss Mok, and that should be the kind of standard she want us to have! So yea, oh and write/draw the way you’re gone present your results! But DON’T NEED to show discussion and conclusion (:
